A novice- & first humidor!

I'm new to cigar passion and just purhased my first humidor.

Can I trust the analog hygrometer that came standard with the humidor or will I need to buy a digital one?

Also I'd love your view on storing cigars- wrappers off or on?

Thanks for any replies and any tips for an earnest cigar newbie!

Brooks.

Go get a digital. You can not trust the analog ones.

As for wrapper on or off. That is a big question. I store them however they come. They stay just fine taht way.

I am looking at getting my first humidor. Can I set it up and make sure it is keeping the right humidity before putting in cigars? Or does having cigars in the humidor effect the humidity?

Hi fellas,

Do youself a huge favor and get a digital hygrometer and salt test it so you know how far it is off (usually 2-4%).

You can get a really good one like the Prometheus or pick one up at Walmart for $13 - just make sure to salt test them.

The absolute best way to make sure your sticks are at the correct humidity is with the humidity beads sold at www.heartfeltindustries.com - by far a "must have".

Cello on, cello off - really makes no difference. I have some 8 year old sticks with the cello on and some with it off.

Hope this helps!

you can also test your hygrometer with a boveda pack. Each pack is marked with its humidity (65%,69% and 70%) . However humidity level you want to go..put both hygrometer and say, a 65% boveda pack in a tightly sealed jar for 24 hours.

the next day....read the humidity level in the hygrometer
the reading overnight in the hygrometer minus the 65(%) in the boveda will give you the difference your hygrometer is OFF the standard.

I just put a small scotch tape over either digital or analaog hygrometer to remind me, how much this hygrometer is OFF the standard.

but thats just me and how I do it...

I'm with Crossbow on the Broveda pack for testing hygrometers.
Cellophane "on" Cellophane "off". Been an ongoing discussion among Herf for many a moon. MRN's book says it delays aging if you leave them on but the foot is less likely to be knicked by handling.
If you send some sticks out make sure they are all cellophaned-up. Or at least rolled in saran-wrap. If you have a naked stick next to a cellophaned stick the naked one will take a beating in-transient.
Beetle Larvae can eat right through cellophane.
Cellophane wrap is semi-permeable and gas can travel through it. It is not plastic.
My recommendation is if you can store them in your humidifier in-the-original-box; take the cellophane off and close the box.
If you get them from Kevin's you won't have that problem!
